With the weather good and the mechanicals mostly squared away, Mark went out to start the patching work on the carapace.

There are a couple of types of injury to the outer shell. The shell is a tape/fabric/paper laminate layer over a chicken wire support, and there are several places where all material down to the chicken wire has been lost.

In other places, the wait of carapace created stressed areas over time that lead to cracks and delamination.

After consulting with some very crafty folks, Mark settled on a fiberglass infused compound. The fibers give it excellent strength and the compound is intended to allow for large hole fills without shrinking. After curing, it will be sanded and painted to match the rest of the shell.
