The Work

Here's a list of the work that was done to the lobster:

  • Mechanical and Aesthetic Inspection: The lobster was thoroughly inspected for any mechanical issues and aesthetic damage. This included checking the structural integrity of the frame, the condition of the paint, and the functionality of all moving parts.

  • Cleaning: The lobster was cleaned to remove any dirt, grime, and rust that had accumulated over time. This involved using various cleaning agents and tools to ensure that the lobster was in good condition for the refurbishment process.

  • Mechanical Repairs: Any mechanical issues identified during the inspection were addressed. This included repairing or replacing any damaged or worn-out parts, such as the tires, wheels, cables, and ties, etc. The control arms and cockpit arrangement were rebuilt as the original control arm had a severely broken weld.

  • Aesthetic Restoration: The lobster's paint was touched up to restore its original vibrant colors. Any scratches, chips, or fading were addressed to ensure that the lobster looked as good as new. This involved sanding, priming, and repainting certain areas of the lobster (and covering old logos). There were also several large holes that needed patching.

  • Safety Testing: The lobster underwent rigorous safety tests in varying grades and conditions to ensure that all repairs and restorations were successful and that the lobster was safe to use.

Many wear parts on the lobster were left in place, mostly cables and cable housings related to the gear shifting and braking system. The cables were found to be in functional condition so we resisted replacing them as to avoid introducing new issues that could arise from a complicated retuning in a limited timeframe.

Carapace patching was done with a fill putty impregnated with fiberglass strands, which was then sanded and painted over.

The control arm was rebuilt by grind out the old weld, and employing a pipe and clamp and positioned for comfortable access.
